I had dabbled in Ruth Rendell's work earlier and wasn't captivated by it. When she died, I decided to try again, and I'm very glad. Master of the Moor is much more than a mystery story--it's a study of a very puzzling and intriguing character, a character who comes very much alive as one reads. This time, I couldn't put it down, and I plan to go on to others of her books.

One expects surprises in a Rendell mystery, but the reader has to fill in a number of details this time.
I love Ruth Rendell, but it is hard to keep to her very high standards all the time. She writes well and the book is a pleasant read, though.
I've read many, many Ruth Rendell books and loved all of them. She is a wonderful storyteller and I highly recommend anything she's written.
The more I read the more I got engrossed. After a slow start this booked picked up with many twists and turns.
I had never read anything by Dame Rendell but had long been impressed with her broad acceptance and approval by the reading community so I bought Master of the Moor for my . I had thought of her as in the same league as Marsh, Tey and Christie.
The book starts off with the discovery of a body and then segues awkwardly into discussions of home life and personal relationships seemingly unrelated to the crime. This continues unabated until the second murder - about half way through the book. Some few pages were devoted to police procedural matters and I found these interesting and initially encouraging and hoped for more. But this was not to be. The plot then thickened with an old, hackneyed formulaic twist that could only result I felt in more soap-opera like details about home life and personal relationships. Rather than find out whether my prediction was correct I just gave up and stopped reading. It wasn't even worth scanning the pages until the end to see "who done it."
Surely this cannot be representative of why Dame Rendell's work has been so popular. I'm going to try another book - a used paper back this time - to find out.
I never thought the words "excruciatingly boring" could be applied to any novel by this great author but, sadly, I can find no other way to describe MASTER OF THE MOOR. Unless you are really interested in nature and don't mind reading page after page of descriptions of every kind of vegetation that can be found on the moors, and when these plants bloom, and why, and for how long, you will find it hard to enjoy this novel. It seemed like Rendell set herself a dubious goal of describing every single inch of the moors and proceeded to do so with a mind-numbing perseverance.
Usually, Rendell is amazing at creating quirky, unusual characters and offering her readers incomparably profound insights into their personalities. For some reason, she fails to do that in this novel. Characters in MASTER OF THE MOOR are schematic and as boring as everything else in the book. There is a host of secondary characters who are so indistinguishable from one another that it's next to impossible to keep track of them.
This isn't a long novel but it drags out so slowly and so little ever happens in it that it feels like it's hundreds and hundreds of boring pages long. All of the author's attempts to create a surprising twist are extremely transparent and one can see what's happening long before these so-called mysteries are revealed. The only good thing about this book is that it is so obviously the worst Rendell has ever written than any other novel by her will absolutely shine in comparison.
Chilling story, very different from the TV seriers
